Our TEFL course in eastern China is located in the country’s largest city, Shanghai. Known as the “Paris of the East” due to the European influence on its architecture, Shanghai is a popular destination for business travelers and tourists alike. The city is renowned for its historical landmarks such as the Bund and Yu Garden as well as its more contemporary style demonstrated in the buildings that make up the famous Lujiazui skyline.

Shanghai’s eclectic mix of buildings in different architectural styles points back to the city’s past as a thriving centre of trade and shipping both locally and globally. The 19th century saw the arrival of Western powers that sought to take advantage of Shanghai’s economic potential and left their mark in the buildings they erected in their designated districts. One of these areas known as the Bund has an extensive variety of architectural styles from the neoclassical HSBC building to the Art Deco Sassoon house. In fact, Shanghai is home to the world’s largest collection of Art Deco buildings due to a boom in construction in the 1920’s and 1930’s. More recently, Shanghai’s architecture has been influenced by its re-emergence as a global economic powerhouse. With contemporary buildings such as the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Oriental Art Center and Shanghai World Financial Center marking the growing wealth of the city, Shanghai blends the new and the old as it does the East and the West.

But the city is not all about its architecture. As with any international city, Shanghai has a thriving nightlife with some of the best clubs in Asia, if not the world. The city abounds with quality eateries where you can enjoy world class food and amazing shops offering all you could want or need. Shanghai is also served by a large and well connected public transport network comprising of subways, buses and taxis, and is also connected to three national high-speed railways providing convenient access to the wider country.

The course accommodation is located just a short subway ride from the training centre, and all of the main tourist attractions can be reached within seven subway stops. Within walking distance of the accommodation you will find some of the best nightclubs Shanghai has to offer as well as fantastic dining and shopping areas.

Getting Started

To be eligible to apply for our course you need to be a fluent English speaker and aged at least 18 years. After completing a brief application you will receive a prompt reply from us. When your application has been approved you will be sent more detailed information covering the course content and schedule as well as accommodation options, travel arrangements and available payment methods. By choosing to take your TEFL course in Shanghai you are not limiting yourself to living and working in the city or China as a whole. Please note that due to recent regulation changes only native speakers of English can work legally as teachers in China, though there are no nationality restrictions for attending the course in Shanghai.

The School

Our TEFL training centre is located in the heart of downtown Shanghai in the Jing’an district. Home to West Nanjing Road, one of Shanghai’s top shopping areas, Jing’an is a key business and commercial district and its many high-rise office and residential buildings form a large part of the Shanghai skyline.

Shanghai is a modern Chinese city with a very unique atmosphere. This uniqueness comes from it’s long history as a centre of trade and transport in the region. With traditional Chinese buildings sitting side-by-side with those built by the Western powers from the 19th century onwards and the modern styles prevalent today. From historic shikumen houses blending European style with Chinese needs to the Art Deco buildings of the 1920’s and 1930’s bringing to mind New York or Chicago, Shanghai is a fascinating mix of cultures.

Our accommodation options are situated within walking distance of local entertainment hotspots and quality shopping and dining areas. The training centre can be reached by a short trip on the subway and the main tourist destinations are within seven subway stops of the accommodation.

Accommodation

Our accommodation options are located near the People’s Square area of the city and are just three subway stops from the training centre. You will find that the prices represent excellent value for money with a choice of dorm, single and twin rooms available. A shared fridge and laundry facilities are also provided.

More upscale accommodation is available but will need to be booked at least two weeks before your course begins.
