This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this course, I have learned that teaching EFL/ESL requires the right methodology. I realized that there are many different ways to approach certain lessons such as the straight arrow, the boomerang and the patchwork approach. This only goes to show that teaching foreign language learners requires the teacher to be flexible and resourceful. There cannot only be one method. This lesson made me more flexible and understanding since there is no single way of doing things. In addition, the english
levels that my students have are clarified to me in this course. Now, I know the language levels and the appropriate descriptors. Furthermore, teaching special groups has been quite easier for me because I know what to expect. Now, I apply differentiated learning since I have learned that it is acceptable in TEFL. It is also important though to place the students appropriately so that differentiated learning will not happen often.
All in all, these lessons have given me more confidence in advising others on how to go about their own lessons. I was able to impart my knowledge to my co-teachers and be a solid role model. Whenever I teach in class, I now have a better grasp on how to approach the classroom situation through proper lesson planning. It is through this course that I am able to properly document all the activities lined up for my students. Due to this, I am personally more satisfied with how my lessons are delivered in class. This is because I know that each lesson is properly planned and all aspects are considered. For instance, now I am able to identify the anticipated problems of both teacher and student.
After receiving my certificate
, I plan on conducting an in-service seminar in my school so that I can share the valuable insights from this course. The ESL/EFL instructors in my school will surely benefit from the different techniques and strategies included in this coursework because of the relevant topics tackled. Moreover, I plan on doing a demo to the new hires every time there is an orientation so that they will witness how an ESL/EFL class should go. These are some of the things I will be doing to contribute to the teachers professional growth in my school. In this way, they will also be more equipped inside and outside the classroom.
