This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I have really gained an insight to the challenges and needs of ESL students. The grammar lessons were the hardest for me, not just because of the difficulty of the concept or rules, but because the modules made me find a way to explain english
grammar to a non-native speaker. This is something native english
speakers don’t have to think about because we do it unconsciously. The challenge in this course is really in explaining something that is intrinsic to you as a native speaker, but completely foreign to others, and I think I was successful at that. I also really liked that the questions in each module forced me to apply what I had learned, rather than just answer multiple choice questions about each module. This allowed me to know what I was grasping, and what I was having difficulty with, rather than mistaking memory for comprehension. This course reminded me of when I took french
classes in University, and the feeling of being taught in a language I had little familiarity with. When I build my lesson plans, I will try to remember what worked for me, and recognize the needs of an ESL learner.
