This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
We have gained a greater appreciation for the importance of using a variety of instructional methods and activities to enhance learning. For example, we found it difficult to understand some of the grammar concepts just by reading about them in a handout or textbook. We found that by taking an online course versus an onsite course, we sometimes missed the immediate oral and visual feedback from the instructor as well as the valuable dialogue between the teacher, the student and other students. Difficult concepts need to be taught in a variety of ways to reach kinesthetic, visual and oral learners. We will insure that our lesson plans include components for a variety of learning styles and for re-teaching and reinforcement of concepts. Although being native english speakers, we have learned and re-learned a great deal about the english language which had either been forgotten or never learned prior. We have gained a greater appreciation for the complexity of grammar and how difficult it is to present these concepts clearly and effectively to english language learners. We understand it is imperative for the concepts to be broken down into small, manageable chunks in order for the material to be presented clearly by the teacher and understood by the students. When developing lesson plans, we will create lessons that focus on a concept that can be understood and built on.
