This course has been beneficial to me on two levels: First, I have learned so much about english grammar. When I was going through primary school, learning grammar was ‘out of style’. Some of the basics were taught, but I don’t recall going into depth about verb tenses and those sorts of topics. It’s been a lot of fun to gain a better understanding of my native tongue. Similarly, I now have a greater respect for students of the english language, because I better understand just how difficult it must be to learn. Compared to other languages, there are so many exceptions to rules, and so often it’s just a matter of memorizing or learning what ‘sounds right’. Secondly, even though, at times, it seems like a ridiculous language, I feel like this course has given me some basic tools to teach english to speakers of other languages. There is still so much learning to do before I can consider myself to be a really competent teacher, but I feel like this course has provided me with a solid foundation to build on. Specifically, I think learning to create lesson plans, gaining an understanding of verb tenses and learning the phonetic alphabet have been the three most practical aspects of this class. Through my professional experience in nursing, I feel I have a good understanding of the importance of body language, and I do a significant amount of teaching in my job, although the teaching I do is very individualized, based on what the patient wants/needs to know on a certain topic. In the future, I’m not sure I see myself teaching in a traditional TESOL classroom (although plans are always subject to change!) I hope to practice the things I’ve learned in the form of tutoring/small group lessons initially. Once I have a little experience under my belt, I would love to teach english to professionals, specifically medical professionals. To do this, I anticipate individualizing/creating most of my curriculum, (or if there is curriculum out there on this specific topic, that’s even better!) so the things I have learned about lesson planning will be very important. Seeing that some of the grammar units presented new information to me, I can see myself referring back to those units to ensure I have a good understanding on the topics as I begin teaching.
