I enrolled in this course because I was already reaching ESL as a volunteer, but felt that I was not doing a great job. I was hoping this course would help me to become a more effective teacher, and give me confidence to teach the “difficult” topics, particularly in regards to grammar. I have already seen the benefits of the course, as I have been teaching my class each week, and have been putting each lesson into practice as I have gone along. Sadly, since my class is low/pre-intermediate, I could seldom use my class lesson plan for the course, so it’s meant preparing two lessons many weeks – but I’m sure that’s been good for me! I think probably the most important “take away” for me is to be reminded that my students are not uneducated – they simply don’t know english. I can push them a lot harder than I thought I should. At the same time, I need to be careful not to try to cram too many different concepts into the same class time. In other words, push harder, but in fewer directions! Feedback I am getting from my director is that my students love my class. And they really feel like they are learning english. She (the director) sat in on my class last week, and learned something she did not know. That’s pretty cool!
