Pronunciation problems in ItalyWhile on the streets of Rome, Italy one can close their eyes and imagine the Rome Empire still exists. The italian people will surround you singing their beautiful language. It is true that the italian language is like music to the ears, but when Italians learn english it might sound a little different. Every country has different pronunciation issues when learning english. Sometimes it depends on the individual or teaching methods. However, when learning english, foreigners from the same country have the same pronunciation issues because they share the same first language. In every language there are pronunciation rules so when one wants to learn another language the rules of their first language need to be broken. This is a great feat to overcome when learning a second language. It's important to look at the different pronunciations of words in both languages, the problems italian speakers have pronouncing english words, and the different exercises used to teach english pronunciation effectively to italian students. It is interesting that english and italian can have the same letters in the alphabet, but have such different pronunciation; only five letters are considered foreign to Italians. The english is a West Germanic language with influences from the Romance languages. italian is a Romance language that is derived from Latin. Although english arose in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms it shares a lot of the root words from Latin. This influence from Latin happened because it was the common language for Christian Churches in all of Europe. Although many root words may be similar the spelling in both languages differ and have different rules for pronunciation. This is one of the main reasons Italians have trouble pronouncing particular words. When italian speakers are first learning english it is natural for them to apply their native language rules to the written words. Each word is a string of letters that have their own rules and when put together make a sound. The problem is that most words in italian are spelt similarly to english, but have different rules for pronunciation. For example, the word 'hotel' is used in both languages. Italians have problems pronouncing the 'h' sound in english because they were taught to pronounce short 'h' sound. Another problem is that italian learners need to train their mouths to say certain sounds that the english language uses. Most Italians have trouble pronouncing 'th' sound in words like "this" and "thank". In italian it is important to try and pronounce every letter in the word. This is different from english because some letters do not get pronounced or have an exaggerated pronunciation. These rules are hard for Italians to read in confidence. Vowels are a specific area in english that Italians have trouble figuring out. In english the word "state" uses the "a" as the strong vowel and the letter "e" then becomes silent. An italian person when reading this word in english might want to pronounce every letter in the word. This would make it a long "a" with the "e" at the end also having a sound. These are some of the most important mistakes for a teacher to pick up on in the italian language. Correcting pronunciation will take time for any student. Remembering different vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation can be hard enough! The best solution for students to learn correct pronunciation is to take it slow and to form good habits from the beginning. Repetition and drilling are good techniques for teachers to use when completing this task. Finding areas that students are having trouble with and then applying the correct lesson exercises will be most beneficial. For example, "th" sound is difficult for italian students and drilling in this area might be the best solution. A teacher can break down the word and explain to the students how the mouth and tongue work to make this sound. Just telling them to repeat the sound might now be enough. Explain the pronunciation process and then apply it first as just a sound. Then, applying this sound to words will help the students understand how this sound is made. english pronunciation of words with vowels will be hard to teach because there are so many rules. First, show the students the structure of words with common vowel sounds. Explain the different parts of the word and how when vowels are placed next to different letters they make different sounds. Use lots of exercises where the students see the spelling and speak the word together because this will build confidence when put into use. Teaching the italian people english is going to be a wonderful experience. I know I will be learning as much about their culture, language, and history as much as I will be teaching mine.
