I've learned that teaching english is not as easy as it may appear on paper. After living in korea and teaching english for four months, I have realized that teaching students regular subjects is entirely different than teaching a foreign language. Even though I felt well prepared to enter the EFL classroom after my Orientation program was complete in Korea, I was surprised by some of the challenges that I faced on a daily basis. Taking this course has helped me to recognize my weaknesses as a teacher and what I can do to improve them. It has helped me to know what to expect when teaching students of all levels. Even though it was a pain to write some of the lesson plans, I know I benefited from it in many ways. One way is that it has forced me now to think about potential problems that may arise for myself and my students during the lesson and solutions on how to solve them. I never did this until I started planning my lessons in this course. Another way is that I found it helpful to plan out how long each part of my lesson is going to take during each stage. Time management is something that I have always struggled with in the classroom. After having to think of how long each activity is going to take for the lessons in this online course, I have become smarter about timing my lessons correctly. I have also found this course to be a helpful review of the english language. There are many things that I didn't realize I had forgotten or worse - never remember learning in the first place. I am very happy that I took this course during the beginning of my time teaching english in korea. I think that I would have had a more difficult time coming up with lessons and ideas if I had taken it prior to coming here. Even though I graduated with a degree in education, I found this course to be very useful for teaching in general, not only the TEFL aspect of it. It has given me some great ideas about structuring my lessons and adapting and supplementing materials. Overall, the course did an excellent job of guiding me on how to teach ESL students, providing a great review of the english language, and instilling confidence in me as an english teacher.
