Why complete a TEFL courseFor me the motivation for taking a TEFL course started as a dream to be able to someday retire and take my wife back to her home country of Cambodia. But as I have discovered that by taking a TEFL course, its more than just using it as a way to survive in a foreign country, it has sparked a real interest in teaching. I have found out that teaching english overseas will give me a unique opportunity to step into another world and become a part of it. A TEFL course will give me the qualifications I need to do that.
A reputable course will outline all aspects of the language: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The advantage of holding a TEFL certificate
for future opportunities is being able to apply for work in different countries. TEFL certificates from accredited
institutions are recognized worldwide and can used almost anywhere in the world.
Besides all the personal reasons, there are many benefits that one gets from taking a TEFL course. By taking a TEFL course I will have developed a good foundation on which to build the skills necessary to teach abroad and to work and live in cambodia
for as long as I want. It also will give me the opportunity to make a positive impact not only on those that I will eventually be teaching but also on those that are my family that live there (i.e. FREE tutoring).
A tefl certification
will help me gain the experience that I will need in teaching english even before I step into a classroom. As a future english teacher a TEFL course will leave me feeling more competent to deal with the ever challenging and changing demands of teaching english as a foreign language. Career prospects are plentiful for TEFL certificate
holders. Jobs can be found in private business schools, larger or smaller language centers, international schools, private one-on- one tutoring and some public schools.
Another very helpful aspect of a TEFL course is that takes you step-by-step through potential problems specific to an EFL class, and then gives you advice on how to deal with those issues. Reviewing verb tenses and other grammar was also highly beneficial to me. The TEFL course helped me increase my language awareness in the rules of grammar and phonology, from parts of speech such as nouns, adjectives and verbs, to learning how to correctly form sentences. Even though Ive spoken english all my life, it would have been difficult knowing exactly how to teach all the different tenses and sentence structures if I hadnt taken a TEFL course. By taking the ITTT course (which is the one I enrolled in) I was able to revisit and brush up on some of the more technical grammatical aspects that had become lost to me over the years. The course also introduced many beneficial teaching techniques and strategies that I can use in the classroom setting. I also learned about the various roles of a teacher such as being a manager, organizer assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model and observer. I learned that these roles are important to understand in order to be successful in the class room. If you are confident, professional, and well grounded in the english language your students will see this and they will be more motivated to learn. You will be successful in the classroom and the teaching possibilities will be finite.
Another advantage of taking a TEFL course is that I will be able to tap into a vast network of professional EFL teachers, which is a huge asset to beginning teachers. This is something that would not have been available to me had I not taken a TEFL course.
And lastly teaching english overseas is a unique opportunity to step into another world and become a part of it. A TEFL course will give me the qualifications to do just that. Also teaching english overseas can be a vastly rewarding volunteer experience and can give international volunteers a unique way to experience different cultures in different countries.
