Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching. This convenient, highly structured design means that you can quickly get to grips with each section before moving onto the next.
Unit 12 deals with teaching productive skills, i.e. speaking and writing skills. With reference to speaking skills, I got an exact idea of the difference between accuracy and fluency activities.
I learnt that writing activities can create major problems and that it is important that the teacher encourages the students to solve spelling, layout and punctuation issues. This unit was helpful in giving an overview of how we can teach receptive skills to students. It differentiated between receptive skills (reading and listening) and productive skills (speaking and writing), and how sometimes productive skills can be more challenging. The unit discussed the reasons for learning receptive skills and the various aspects of learning them.
