This unit taught me what it means to be both a good teacher and a good learner. To be a good teacher you must be caring, kind and patient. You must seek to motivate your students and correct them without affecting such motivation. Know your students and be able to identify their weaknesses and strengths. To be a good learner you must have a willingness to learn, a willingness to ask questions, desire to experiment, an acceptance of error correction, and an ability to think about your own learning methods. To be a good teacher you must take on different roles based on the classroom situation and based on the students you are teaching. Be a prompter to help those who seem to get stuck on certain topics or ideas. Be an organizer to help utilize the time and activities wisely for the best learning experience possible. Be a participant to stay humble and give the students a chance to be a leader so that they might learn as well. Be an observer always monitoring your students so that you can help them continually grow. Be a resource, as I will quite possibly be the only English speaking person they have ever come in contact with. To be these things will help me identify where my students are on the different levels of language learning and to help them all continue to expand their knowledge of English. The most important thing I learned is finding the motivation for my students will allow me to teach English in a way so that it has the biggest impact on their lives. There are many different motivations but their specific reason for learning English is the first place will help me as a teacher proceed in lessons.
After Unit One I have learned that I am not only learning how to be a good teacher but that I am learning to be a good student as well. The best teachers are continually studying and trying to better their knowledge. So the point of Unit One is to let me realize that I will continue to learn so I must implement these ideas into my studies as I continue through the course and as I teach as well.
