The unit helped me in understanding the purpose and definition of test and assessment. The unit further explained several different form of assessments that teachers can conduct in the classroom, such as tutorials, student evaluation, and tests. Tutorials can be done in a group setting or individually, and is aimed to review the work done and ask students if they encountered any difficulties during class. Student evaluation is a test where students give feedback to their teacher regarding how they feel about the lesson, whether they think they received enough vocabulary or grammar lessons, whether the pace of the lesson is moving too quickly or not, etc. Tests are usually given to assess what the students have learned and what they have retained. Tests are also conducted at the start of the course to know the students' level of English and at the end of the course, to know how far they've progressed. There are several types of tests, such as placement test, diagnostic test, progress test, and practice tests. Then, there are external examinations. External examinations are conducted by outside bodies which claim they can assess a person's level of English. Examples of external examinations are TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, the Cambridge Assessment tests, and the ESOL Skills for Life.
