Though previous units have touched on the importance of materials and visual aids in the classroom, this unit's entire focus is on the variety of resources available to EFL teachers and students. Resources--in particular, digital resources--make lessons more interactive and immediately relavent to students. I remember when I was in ninth grade, my Geometry class used an IWB. It was my first exposure to IWBs, and it was my favorite math class I took before university. Even then, I remember realizing the importance of using up-to-date technology in the classroom. Current music, current DVDs, current stories, social media posts, etc. If we bring the materials students see every day into the classroom, it increases their motivation to participate. In addition to teaching English, these materials can help students become more effective communicators, even in their native tongue. (Even though it is an old-fashioned material, the use of a blackboard is very important, too. Use different colors; be hyper-organized; make it "pop" as much as possible to be visually accessible to students.) Some of the resources provided in this unit were already familiar to me. Dave's ESL Cafe, in particular, has long been a favorite. Still, I'm glad to have a list of resources compiled in one space. I look forward to sharing more of these recourses with my students.
