During the first lessons, we may encounter a new group (they don't know each other) or with an existing group (they all know each other and know about ESL methodology). We can do our best to get to know better our students, their level and needs. And if it is a new group, help other students to get to know each other. To help students to get motivated at the beginning of the class, we can use 'warmers'. These are usually games like Hangman or Pictionary. They are especially useful if they can be linked in to the Study phase of the lesson. If we face the situation in which different levels are appreciated in class, we can use the same material but different tasks or pair stronger students with weaker ones. This way the weaker students feel that are following the pace of the lessons and the stronger student do not feel bored. Regarding large classes we should: use worksheets, pair/group work /clarity, choral repetition (not individual), appoint group leaders and dynamics. Make use of English language and avoid at maximum possible the students' native language. This way we encourage them to speak in English. About reluctant students we can do the following to help them: use plenty of pair work, use controlled practice, use role-play, use a tape recorder.
