The use of course books and lesson material will be an essential aid to effectively teaching. I remember when I used to teach high school physics and I realized that the course book I was using lacked certain things that my students needed to know or explained things in ways that were too advanced for them. Using a course book doesn't mean you have to stick to it at all times but rather you can use it as a tool, adapting the lessons to fit your students needs, omitting things that may not be relevant or up to date, and extracting ideas from lessons and completely rearranging it to be more modern and appealing to the students.
