I believe the following quote from Unit 7 exquisitely summarizes the unit’s learning objective. “…there are four things that students need to do with new language; be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it’s constructed and be able to practice and produce it.” New language students need to be exposed to as much of the language as possible. From the start the teacher wants to immerse the students in the new language. One way to do this is to begin with simple classroom commands such as “I don’t understand” and “May I be excused to use the restroom?” It is important that the teacher expose as much of the new language as possible and enable students to also begin using it as quickly as possible. Just teaching students to speak a new language is not enough in and of itself. Students must understand the meaning behind the language. One way to do this is by teaching culture alongside the language. Teaching language culture is essential in helping the student appreciate the true depth of the words being taught. Use the news and multimedia to demonstrate issues of the day presented and spoken in the new language’s country. Learning how a new language is constructed should not be a passive experience. Get students involved utilizing games and role-playing. Get hands-on by and encourage participation with games. Role-playing is essential for creating real-world scenarios in which students use their language skills while thinking on their feet. For students to learn a new language, they need to be as engaged outside of the classroom as well as inside. Students need to practice beyond textbook homework by assigning exercises that require interacting with real people. The idea is to expose students to how language is used in the real world, while giving them examples of practical application. Again, use multimedia like television, film, and radio broadcasts to get students ready for the real world.
