This unit encapsulates the hard-knock lesson I learned in my first year of English teaching: Don’t tie yourself to the course materials. Starting the year prepared to adapt, supplement, replace and omit will leave you well prepared for the year-end tests, as you will have adequately supplemented the course material throughout the year, and have no need to cram extra information in towards the end. The distinction between authentic and non-authentic study materials was very useful and I can see how a balanced use of both will provide the students with a more complete and well-rounded study experience.
