As I started Unit 11 I was greatly intrigued by the terms receptive and productive skills as I was unfamiliar with them. However, I quickly realized that I have worked with these skills throughout my teaching tenure. In American business and vocational education, we have what are called the Universal Foundation Skills. These foundational skills are part of the New York State Career Development and Occupational Studies Learning Standards. The Universal Foundation Skills tell us what skills a person needs to perform a specific activity or job and are defined in three areas: basic skills, thinking skills, and personal qualities. Basic Skills are further defined as reading, writing, mathematics, listening and speaking. Reading a manual, listening to instructions, writing a memo, and making a presentation are all examples of using basic foundational skills on the job. With the exception of mathematics, the basic skills are equivalent to the receptive: reading and listening; and productive: writing and speaking skills discussed in Units 11 and 12. In the UFS reading is defined as being able to locate, understand, and interpret written information in prose and in documents such as manuals, graphs, and schedules. Listening is defined as receiving, attending to, interpreting, and responding to verbal messages and other cues. Unit 11 I found to be an extension of what I already knew about reading and listening. The UFS definition answers the “what” the receptive skills are while Unit 11 answers the “why” and “how” to teach students to use them.
