Unit 2 concentrated on grammar and parts of speech. It had been awhile since I had reviewed grammar, so it was a good refresher and there were a few things like past and present participles I didn’t remember at all! It was interesting to consider all the rules around parts of speech that we just know inherently as native/fluent speakers of English, then to consider how often things are irregular and don’t follow the rules, and how that would mess with someone trying to learn English. It was also interesting to think about other language structures – like Mandarin – where certain parts of speech like articles do not exist, so even the base framework for the structure is different. It made me think about and empathize with the learner.
