Foreign language teachers have many methods and techniques at their disposal when conducting a class. It can be difficult to identify which methodology is best suited for your students, as it comes down to your class and their strengths/weaknesses, age, and group size. My favorite is Community Language Learning, as it allows the students to dictate the direction of the discussion. I believe that student centered lessons like CLL help to build confidence as the students typically choose topics that they are interested or comfortable with. The techniques are used in conjunction with the "Engage, Study, Activate" method. When we 'Engage', we try to get the student's attention and warm them up for the next part of the lesson. When we 'Study', we begin focusing on the language and practicing. Elicitation is commonly used as it allows you to gauge your student's knowledge before beginning. When we 'Activate', we call upon the skills and knowledge obtained from this and previous lessons to encourage students to speak openly to the best of their ability. The ESA elements can be combined in a variety of ways allowing for vastly different lesson structures (straight-arrow, boomerang and patchwork), making it very a versatile and essential tool for beginner teachers.
