In Unit 16 I learned that direct speech is an exact quotation of spoken or written words which requires the insertion of “quotation” or inverted comma marks. Indirect or reported speech is the process of repeating or restating an exact quotation that has been heard or read. However, indirect speech does not use quotations marks which are instead replaced by the word “that” and a change in verb from present to past tense. Often the subject may be changed to a pronoun in reported speech. Upon further research, I found both direct and reported speech to have advantages and disadvantages which I believe should be considered when developing a lesson plan as well as addressing the issues of plagiarism and proper literary citation methods. The advantages of direct speech include increased listener or reader engagement as a result of receiving the message from its source and it adds variety and character. The disadvantages of direct speech begin with adding too much variety and character. Long direct speeches can confuse or bore the listener or reader. A second pitfall of direct speech is multiple or too many speakers or writers. Again, this can confuse the listener or reader. The final disadvantage is that since direct speech has to be an exact quote which places listeners at a disadvantage for live unrecorded speech. The advantages of reported speech include a summarization rather than an exact quotation of what the speaker said. the use of indirect speech in your writing, it can help in summarizing all the things that the speaker said. Reported speech can help to make the pace of the action move more smoothly than direct speech. Lastly, with indirect speech there is an absence of the fear of misquoting what someone else said. The first disadvantage of reported speech is that the reader or listener does not get to know the exact words that the speaker used. The second disadvantage of indirect speech is that it can be difficult to indicate certain things like the speaker’s emotion, manner of expression or voice quality.
