This unit covered testing from two perspectives. First it is covered as a concept, to outline the goals and utility of examinations (e.g. placement of students into different classes/levels, evaluating ability and knowledge retention in an ongoing way). Second it is covered from the students' perspective, outlining the different types of exams students may encounter in their lives: progress tests or quizzes written by the teacher for the class; schoolwide tests that may be given to all students; standardized tests such as TOEFL or TOEIC that are required for work or academic reasons and administered outside class; and practice exams given in the classroom to help students prepare for standardized testing.
