Teaching methods differ greatly based on the group you are teaching. For many beginner students, your class may be some of the first exposure to English that they have ever had. Some students may have encountered English from western media and products (false beginners). Adult beginners tend to be more motivated than young beginners, as they have usually made the decision themselves to learn. There are also student who have never worked with the roman alphabet, meaning there is a lot more work to be done before they can begin to build true literacy skills. There are general rules to teaching beginners regardless of age. You don't want to give them too much too fast. It is important to be realistic and take it a step at a time as the entire class may not be able to follow as well as you think. Visual pieces are important, and drilling/repetition can be very effective. If the students are multinational, there can be a huge benefit from English being the only language many of them have in common. It has become more common for teachers to get work teaching individual students, especially in the business world. Course books are very helpful, and it is a lot easier to tailor your lesson plan to the students specific needs as you don't need to worry about some students falling behind others. With only one student to focus on, keeping them interested and engaged is less difficult as you don't have to cast as wide of a net of interesting topics and discussions. Children do very well with repetition and slow delivery, as it is most likely how their parents taught them their native language (which wasn't very long ago!). Positive encouragement goes a long way as kids constantly seek teacher approval. Let the children know you appreciate the effort they are putting in. Business English students have a specific goal or purpose for their learning of the language. You may work with them one on one, in a diverse class of different professions, or with multiple individuals from one company. Knowing industry specific terms and topics can be very beneficial, but it is not a requirement. A common difficulty with business English learners is that they are usually attending class either before or after work, meaning many of them are exhausted. Attendance and homework completion may not be as consistent as with regular students. Some students may be more proficient than others, as they are typically grouped based on profession, so you must adjust you lesson and cater to the group as best you can. Needs analysis worksheets help to tailor you lesson plan to the diverse needs of the group.
