This unit discusses the importance of teaching pronunciation and how a teacher's ability to understand the ways in which intonation, stress, and phonology can help her to teach her students better pronunciation. Proper intonation of a sentence will greatly improve an ELL's ability to communicate in their new language. Understanding how the stress of a particular word in a sentence may affect the meaning of that sentence is crucial for comprehension. A large portion of this unit covers the phonetic alphabet; it seems a good idea for teachers of English to have awareness of this alphabet so that they can be clear and consistent when helping students tackle the challenges of pronunciation. Also, the physical movements and vibrations the tongue and mouth and vocal chords (respectively) make are useful to know and can be used to help students understand how English words are supposed to not only sound but feel. "Feeling" the new language, whether it be the individual sounds letters or syllables make or the intonation or stress of a sentence or word, will further students' ability to convey and receive the messages communication requires.
