UNIT 11 – TEACHING RECEPTIVE SKILLS This lesson talks about teaching receptive skills (reading and listening), and is quite short but has useful resources. It describes the two main reasons why we might be motivated to read or listen – this may be done for a purpose (such as installing a new electronic device in your home) or for entertainment (such as watching your favourite TV show or reading a book). These actions involve a lot of separate skills, and are often more complicated than many people initially believe. Understanding while reading or listening thus depends on several skills: predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for the general “gist”, finding detailed information involving the whole text/audio, and deduction from context. Students can experience a lot of difficulty with reading and listening (particularly with listening, as there is less time to deduce and extrapolate meaning). To help get through these problems, teachers can pre-teach vocabulary (however students should also be taught how to read texts without understanding every single word, as this is a key skill). We can also select texts (both authentic and non-authentic) carefully. Overall teacher planning is extremely important to effectively teach receptive skills. The unit then gives an example Patchwork lesson based on the topic of Elvis Presley.
