UNIT 4 – PRESENT TENSES This unit gave a nice overview of the present tenses (simple, continuous, perfect, and present perfect), however as I am already very familiar with English grammar, I found this a little tedious to read through. Nevertheless, it can’t hurt to have a solid overview of even the most basic concepts of a language, and I was happy to not find any major gaps or mistakes in my knowledge. The unit covered the present tenses, described spelling rules (which can be challenging sometimes and could be a source of student mistakes), described grammar rules (for positive statements, negative statements, and question forms) and gave several example sentences. In terms of my knowledge, I benefitted from the section about non-progressive verbs, especially when their meaning changes when used in the continuous or simple tense. These verbs were described as being divided (roughly) into four categories: involuntary senses, feelings and emotions, mental activity, and possession. These categories are useful to help the students choose the correct tense in which tense to use their chosen verb. I also highly appreciated the inclusion of various activities that could be used in the Activate stage of the lesson, which were divided into different activities based on which tense the lesson is designed to cover.
