In Unit 16, conditionals and reported speech were covered. Conditionals are sentences containing an -if clause, which has a condition to be met before the action or statement in the main clause can be true. The five different types of conditionals are zero conditional, first conditional, second conditional, third conditional, and mixed conditional. The second, third, and mixed conditionals deal with past tenses of verbs while the zero and first conditionals use present tenses. Direct speech is ultimately a conversation or a statement made by someone. A reported speech can be thought of as an act of repeating the initial message or statement made but to a different individual. If the direct speech was made in the present tense, it should be reported in the past tense. If the direct speech is in the past tense, the reported usually stays in the past as well. Overall, conditionals and reported speech can be difficult topics for learners of the English language. Teachers need to utilize creative ways to help students learn each topic, as it is an important aspect of the English language.
