I am currently teaching a mixed level English class. The students come from four different countries and have varying levels of English understanding. Many have challenges reading and writing in their own language, let alone the English language. Correcting errors and mistakes has been a challenge for me as many students don't have the means yet to understand why they may be in error. I am heartened to learn that I am more or less following a good method for helping students realize and correct their errors. I often use the student-student correction technique. This technique also connects the students to each other and encourages them help each other rather rely only on the teacher. I teach adults and have noticed that even grown-ups can become dependent on their teacher. Recently, I gave them an open-book test. I allowed them to work in teams to review the material we had covered so far. They were not allowed to ask me any questions - only their classmates. I did this because I wanted them to understand that just coming to class is not enough; they must study outside class, ask questions of themselves and other people in order to really grasp the language and understand their mistakes. I have given the tests back to them with the assignment to correct the mistakes they have made and give it back to me again. I think this will be a good way to encourage students to correct themselves, to reinforce that they have the ability to do so. It will provide an opportunity for me to see whether they are making mistakes or errors.
