In unit three we discussed methods, theories and techniques. Some of the different theories for learning used the behavioral model of audio-lingualism which focuses on repetition and conditioning of language into the student in more of a factory or sterile Skinner box. In contrast the suggestopaedia method focuses on building a relationship with the students and making them feel comfortable and confident. One technique used in this is to give the students new, English sounding, names like Chad or Bernie. This creates a parent-children relationship instead of a teacher/ruler-student relationship. The main topic of the lesson was the ESA method of teaching which is to Engage, Study, and Activate. Engage is first and used to warm up the class to elicit responses usually in an ice breaking manner such as showing pictures of animals and asking them do you like these animals. The study stage makes up the real meat of the lesson. It focuses on language and how it is constructed the example being What can and can't this animal do. They can make lists using can and can't. Activity is another fun way to repeat the lesson learned in this example having the students create a super animal and present it to the class. The tough part it seems is to be able to go into class everyday with a new and exciting way to engage them and to create activities that are fun, but also work as a repetition tool.
