This unit covers the most prominent methodologies that exist for teaching the English language as a second language. While each of the methods have their strengths and weaknesses, it is still debated which method is the best. The method that is best suited for new teachers, and which will be the focus for this program is the Engage, Study, Activate (ESA) method. In this method, the lesson can be broken down into 3 different stages: the engage stage which is intended to be a warm-up for the students and get them started in speaking and thinking in English; the study stage which is the introduction of the new language point of the lesson; and the activate stage which is to allow students to work freely with the new language point and combine it with what they already know. While each lesson has to incorporate each of these stages, they can be used in various ways and in different combinations to fully teach the language point. It is important to incorporate different methods and activities in lessons to keep the students interested and the lessons fresh and exciting for both the student and teacher. Lastly, the unit covers the process of correction. While correction is important, it is also important to keep in mind how different methods of correction can impact the students' learning. Firstly, it is important to understand the difference between a mistake (which is something that can be easily fixed and often fixed by the student themselves) and an error (which tends to be a more ingrained mistake that may be more problematic and difficult to fix). Next, it is also important to understand who should do the correcting. Self correction is the best method because it allows the student to reflect upon their mistake and also correct it themselves. Student-student correction is also helpful because it allows students to help each other out and again work out the issue themselves and resolve the problem. Lastly, teacher correction should only be utilized if there is no other resolution to the problem; this method is avoided because it doesn't allow the students to think about their mistakes and resolve them, thus they are not able to understand why they are incorrect and will be unlikely to remember the issue and make the mistake again in the future. Thus, teachers should avoid the temptation to immediately correct students' mistakes. The unit also covers generally when teachers should step in and correct and how to correct properly, as well as how to correct written work effectively.
