Classroom Management Classroom management in my opinion means being in control of the environment of the classroom through lesson preparation, a general positive attitude, and creating good rapport with the students. This is different from the teaching role from unit 1 of manager/controller as it more so refers to all the planning done before classes to ensure the learning environment encourages student interest and involvement as much as possible. Good classroom management should involve the all nine of the teaching roles. Body language is key for a teacher to convey a sense of confidence to students. A teacher who is relaxed and confident will likely to radiate the same toward the class. Eye contact with students helps to ensure students understand what is going on, indicate who is to speak, to check everyone is participating, and to maintain discipline. Gestures are also very important when trying to communicate the meaning of new language terms and to add interest. A teacher should also learn to vary their voice according to circumstances. A teacher’s body language, eye contact, and voice does generally reflect their level of preparation and passion toward teaching. ‘ Changing the grouping or paring of students is essential from teacher centered parts of the lesson to student centered activates. How a class is grouped should be based on the class size and classroom furniture. A class should balance whole class work with individual and group/pair work so that things are not so predictable. A teacher has the authority to control the grouping of students but should not make students feel uncomfortable being polite in asking students to rearrange themselves.
