This unit taught me that there are 2 groups of class. A new group where students don't know each other and there's some work that needs to be done to establish rapport. Secondly there's an existing groups where the students already know and are comfortable with each other. I learned that you shouldn't use the course book in the 1st lesson and that there are a number of activities you should use instead. For example, questionnaires and pass the ball activity which gives the student a chance to ask the teacher some "ice-breaking" questions. There are a number of warmer games the teacher can use to motivate and inspire students to get into the mood of learning and participating in the class such as hangman which can be used to revise vocabulary or learn new words. This unit also taught me how deal with a number of different issues ranging from large classes and the use of native languages to reluctant students and how to best deal with each issue. For example when dealing with reluctant students the teacher can use a number of different activities such as role-play and group/pair work.
