Teaching Pronunciation and Phonology Pronunciation is the most neglected aspect in English teaching because teachers lack training and confidence in the subject. However it is crucial to understanding the meaning of speech and important to students of English. Phonology is the study of the physical properties of sounds. Intonation is the variation of volume and pitch in a whole sentence, while stress is more concerned with individual words. Typically, English sentences have a rise-fall intonation, with the falling intonation indicating that the speaker is finishing what she has to say. A rising intonation indicates that a response is required. Flat intonation indicates that the speaker doesn't have much to say or doesn't wish to communicate. Stress can indicate the important word in a sentence. Multisyllabic words have a stressed syllable. There are four means of sound joining in English: linking, sound changing, sound dropping, and extra lettering. The phonemic alphabet is a way of writing words according to their sound. Articulation refers to the way out vocal organs make different sounds, including the place and manner of articulation.
