I learned that apparently pronunciation is the most neglected part of teaching English which means that this is a section I will have to focus on as a teacher and that applied phonetics are very rarely taught in schools. I also learned that there are 3 patterns of Intonation:
1. Rise/fall (normal), which means the speaker is finished talking
2. Fall/rise, which indicates surprise or disagreement and generally means the speaker expects a response or confirmation. And
3. Level intonation, which indicates the speaker has nothing to say or is not interested in communicating.
I learned that the word that bears the principal emphasis in the sentence is the stressed word and there are 2 rules that apply word stress. That one word has one stress and cannot have two and that you can only stress syllables not individual vowels or constants. I also learned that there are a number of techniques for teaching and indicating stress, intonation and pronunciation.
