Verb tenses and knowing when to use the correct tense in direct speech and reported sentences is an important part of learning the English language. Role playing can be a great way to practice these skills. Higher levels can also be asked to make a list of as many verbs as possible that can replace the reporting verb. Each group can be given a collection of direct speech sentences. They choose an appropriate reporting verb, and then alter the sentence accordingly.
