Most of my personal phonetic studies I went through when I was in primary and elementary school. I strongly remember having the phonetic alphabet with the dictionary words at the back of our course books. We did use them when we were younger but as we grew and were able to surround ourselves with more English language through tv series and movies, the need for the alphabet kind of faded away. I agree that it is quite practical to have them with the words and go through the meanings as in some countries where the phonetics are completely different like in Thailand, trying to teach intonation for example, is quite different to western countries. It would be interesting to know, what ways help the most to understand and hear the differences in language as they say that some phonetics a human person is not able to learn after 13 years of age. I sort of disagree as there are people that have pitch perfect ears, surely there are people that can hear all the differences in each language.
