I learned that English has to be one of the hardest languages to learn, because there is so much irregularity! If there are rules, you can follow them, but if there are rules that only apply sometimes…that makes everything a whole lot trickier. Probably like most native speakers of English, I hadn’t thought much about all the various ways that English usage dictates the particular moment in the past. I think the concept of past tense - and particular types of past tense - is a pretty complicated thing to teach, particularly, again, because of the irregularity.
