I think it's excellent that the course material encourages to talk with students and to help them to start assessing themselves as well and make them think what would profit them the most. Tests after all are not always the whole truth when some of the attenders might not be feeling well or something distracting might've happened the night before. I always feel that having a genuine conversation tells a lot about the persons abilities as the grammar needs to be quite deeply ingrained in order to come out correct in a normal conversation. Of course, formal writing and other English ways need a different type of assessment. I rarely personally felt like the tests that I had as a teenager would've told the whole story or my ability to survive in a English environment.
