This unit discussed when and how to introduce new vocabulary. The teacher should know his or her student population and chose vocabulary and structural objectives that are appropriate for the age and ability. He or she can consider the frequency of usage, difficulty in pronunciation, and its commonality to other English words already known and words in the students' native language.
The teacher will want to engage the student in an activity that gets them think about the topic about to be discussed. He or she will then want to introduce the new structure and vocabulary during the Study portion of the lesson. Word searches, gap fills, and scrambles are very useful during this portion of the lesson. Then you will want to Activate the acquired skill by having the students role-play, or have a debate, etc. with the new material. There can be multiple Study and Activate portions of the lesson as long as each class starts with an Engage portion and ends with an Activate activity.
