Unit 7 gave me an introduction to teaching vocabulary, grammatical structures and language functions.
I learned that vocabulary item selection depends on how appropriate the words are to the students and it also must be teachable to the different levels. For beginner learners I need to use easy, visual language. Students need to know the meaning of the word, how to use it, how it is written and when can they use it. The most common way of teaching vocabulary is the straight arrow ESA lesson.
When teaching grammatical structures teachers must choose techniques according to the level of the class. Students must understand the meaning of the grammatical structures, how they can use them and how to form them.
I learned about the different language functions, such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing and suggesting. Role plays are very effective way to teach these functions.
