Unit 18 introduces modals - which are used for possibility, obligation, permission, ability, or advice - along with relative clauses and phrasal verbs. Modals includes transitive verbs, which can be used to create a passive voice. A passive voice shifts attention away from the actor, and places it on the thing which is being acted upon. Relative clauses is additional information (a clause) that modifies a noun. The way this information is introduced can change the overall meaning of the sentence. Phrasal verbs are particularly difficult for students to learn, and are essentially multi-word verbs. This lesson gives readers a broad overview of the above grammar and thus will allow me to better utilize and introduce it into my own lessons.
