Unit 20 is about troubleshooting. It deals with common problem situations, for example first lessons. Whether it’s a new group, where students don’t know each other and may be unfamiliar with EFL teaching, or it’s an existing group, where students are familiar with one another, it’s always important for the new teacher to establish rapport and to find out about the students’ interests, needs and each student’s individual level. This should be every first lesson’s focus. Warmers – short, fun, communicative activities – help students to get motivated for class. There are different ways of dealing with different levels in one class, e.g. using different materials, using the same material with different tasks, or pairing stronger and weaker students. When classes are large, worksheets, pair and group work, clear instructions, choral repetition, and the appointment of group leaders can be supportive techniques. The use of native language should be prevented from the teacher’s side, to increase English talking time. Reluctant students can be encouraged to talk by using plenty of pair work, controlled practice, role-plays and by using a tape recorder. Difficulties with listening texts will surely arise, but they can be dealt with using techniques for the improvement of receptive skills. As every student has his/her own pace, extra material and tasks should be kept handy for the faster ones so that they don’t get bored. I’ve realized that many problems may occur when teaching EFL, but that this is natural and there is always a way to deal with these challenges.
