This unit discussed the four different types of past tenses and their usages. Past simple: something that was completed in the past. "I bought bread." Past continuous: describes something that was happening for a period of time in the past. "I was buying bread when she walked in." Past perfect: describes something that was completed before something else, in the past. "I had bought my bread by the time she walked in." Past perfect continuous: describes something that started in the past but we do not know if it ended when something else occurred. "I had been waiting to buy my bread for twenty minutes when she walked in." The past perfect continuous is the most difficult of these four tenses to learn and use.
