The best part of this unit was realizing that now that the different present tenses are understood (from two units ago), understanding the past tenses is a much easier task. Of course, there are still exceptions and difficulties that many students will encounter, but as they will likely have already seen the different aspects of the present tense by the time they focus explicitly on the different aspects of the past tense, this will make the past tense much easier all around. Likewise, I will probably have already had practice teaching the different aspects of the present tense, making the teaching of past tenses go more smoothly as well.
Practicing verbs with an irregular past simple will be especially important at first, since many common verbs are irregular (ex. see-->saw). The correct past participles of irregular verbs might also need to be reinforced in order to form the correct past perfect tense (ex. see-->had seen). Of course, these past participles are also used in the present perfect tense, but this will be a good opportunity to strengthen them.
Finally, the suggestions for the Activate stage of teaching are especially helpful and creative, and sparked some ideas of my own as a bonus. I especially like the idea of keeping a diary/journal, since these often recount events in the past.
