In this chapter I learned the different types of modal auxiliary verbs, types of tones (passive and active) and phrasal verbs used in English. Modal auxiliary verbs are used to change the meaning and level of formality in a sentence. Words such as can, should, would etc. are used to either explain, ask or imply something in a sentence. Active and passive voices work to shift the focus of a sentence to the doer to the thing that is being done. Phrasal verbs are verbs that consists of multiple words that work within the context of the sentence. Things such as turn out or pick up are phrases that we use in English but may be completely foreign to a ESL student.
