This unit allowed me to start thinking more in-depth about possible lesson plans based on the ESA method of teaching. In order to learn English, students must practice vocabulary, grammar, and the functions of the language. Sometimes lessons include exposing students to new material in all three areas, but most of the time a lesson will focus on one. Which thing is being focused on will affect the type of ESA structure that is used for the lesson; however, there are no absolute rules as to whether a straight arrow, boomerang, or patchwork lesson is used. That being said, it might be useful, especially when I'm still gaining experience in TEFL, to frequently utilize the suggestions put forth in this unit. In other words, at first I might decide to stick mostly to straight arrow lessons when focusing on grammar and vocabulary, and use patchwork and boomerang lessons when the new material is more functions-based. Then, as I gain more experience and confidence with these lesson structures, I should start to gain some insights on how to "tweak" things a little more often, when appropriate. I'll be a more effective teacher by looking for these insights and ideas, and by learning to be adaptable in the classroom and fit the lessons to the students and their needs.
