Unit 11 deals with teaching receptive skills. These receptive skills are reading and listening, in which listening is more difficult, because you can listen to a dialogue only once usually and therefore must focus even more to understand everything right away. Reading and listening depend on the mind’s activity to understand the meaning of words and this builds on ‘pre-existent knowledge’. Other skills for understanding a text or a dialogue are predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming the text to get the general idea, focussing find out detailed information, and deduction from the context to understand some difficult or unknown words or phrases within a text. Special focus must be put on the vocabulary of a text and the kind of text before using it at class. The text’s topic should be interesting to the students and interest should be created before working with the text. Tasks based on the text should be challenging but realistically achievable. I’ve learned why practising receptive skills at class is so important and how it can be done in a way that motivates and supports the students in their learning process.
