This unit looked into the grammar of conditional sentences and of reported and direct speech. Conditionals are sentences structured with two clauses, one that creates a condition upon which the main clause forms a consequence. Conditional clauses use the word ‘if’ or ‘when’ to indicate the condition upon which the consequence is contingent. Teaching the different types of conditional sentences to students can be done by matching games, completing the blank, and for more advanced levels, discussions prompted by a “what would you do if…?” question. The difference between direct speech and reported speech is the verb form that changes when someone repeats what someone else has already said. This can be a tricky thing to teach students, so teaching this in a slow and patient manner and including many opportunities for practice is the best approach.
