English has a number of conditionals to express a varying degree of certainties between two related occurrences. These begin at the 0 (facts, when one condition is met, a second condition follows without doubt, such as pure water freezing under specific pressures/temperatures) and go to the third, with very unlikely events. Some students find the 2nd, 3rd and mixed conditionals difficult due to the use of past tense for future actions. Reported speech is simply the reporting of something said to another person. As reported speech takes places after the original speech, we often must adjust tenses to reflect this - if someone said, last week, they were going to take a course on mathematics "tomorrow", we would need to adjust our report to a third person. Instead of (from Person 1 to me) "I'm going to take a math class tomorrow", we would need to say (from us to person 2), "She was going to take a math class the next day". This awareness of time may take a little practice for many students.
