Unit 18 deals with modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. Modal auxiliary verbs go before other verbs and add meaning to this main verb, e.g. obligation or permission. They can be a tool for more formal speaking or writing, too. Their correct use requires a lot of experience and a higher level of language skills. Therefore, they should be practised over a longer period. The passive voice is used when it’s not know or irrelevant who performs an action. Its tense remains the same according to the active voice. Relative clauses modify nouns in independent clauses. They can be either defining, giving essential meaning, or non-defining, adding unessential information to the sentence. In the second case, commas are critical, whereas they are not used in the first case. Phrasal verbs are formed by a verb plus one or two participles and they often have a different meaning from the verb’s base form. They are more difficult to be understood by students and should be used every now and then by the teacher to familiarize the class with them. I have learned different ways of explaining and practising all these grammatical structures. I have become aware of the necessity that students need to practise a lot to use all of them correctly and fluently.
